“BOOM!!” A massive crack of lightning flashed through the inky sky, illuminating all below as a torrential downpour washed over every once dry crack and crevice below. There was an annoyed growl as a dark red dragon stomped his foot down in a puddle of mud, making it splash up onto the rabbits that ran past, trying to escape the ever rising flood behind them as the rivers and leading to the nearby lake began to flood, water rushing down them and sweeping away every plant and animal they came across as the waters strength only seemed to increase with every passing minute.

“Gah! Gotta find even higher ground!” The dragon growled in anger, watching as the forest life around him was swept away, trees toppling out of view as they were uprooted and pushed aside. “There’s gonna be nothing left..” A voice whispered nearby, chilling the dragon to the core as he turned and saw a large dragon carrying a gryphon under her wing, trying to keep him away from the hell storm around them. “That’s why we have to keep moving!” Crimson spat back, spewing a bit of light blue flame from his maw as he spat, his eyes brimming with both anger and sadness, tears of hate filling them.

“We have to help them… Everything will die if we don’t do something!” Iris spat back, baring her teeth at the red dragon’s behavior. “There has to be a way to stop the flood! Or at least delay it!” She had to roar to be heard over the pounding rain and rampaging rapids. “We can’t do anything! We’ll be killed if we try!” He growled, turning away from her and taking another step in the deep mud, sliding slightly as the ground gave way, “We have to!” She snarled, running up to him and pushing him to try and get his attention, making him growl threateningly as he lost his balance and barely managed to catch himself. “Fine! What on earth can we do? It doesn’t look like this storm is gonna be slowing down anytime soon…” He said, lowering his voice and listening to the groaning of the trees.

Iris looked down, her maw open and her eyes frantic as she racked her brain for answers, “I-I…” She stopped, looking up at him breathlessly as lightning flashed again, lighting up the sky above and revealing her wide eyes, “Dark blue just like her scales… “ Crimson though, giving a weak smile as the sound of rushing water got even louder and the cracking of yet another tree was heard, the forest was falling apart at the seems… “Iris… We can’t do anything…” He whispered, holding out his hand to her, his own eyes full of sad understanding as the ground behind him, further up the path began to give way, revealing a large sinkhole, the ground was opening up… swallowing up all in its path…

“Crimson… Move…” She whispered, yet not taking her eyes off of him as the ice cold, muddy water started to build around them, quickly rising past their feet. “I love you Iris…” He whispered, gently kissing her on the lips as the sound of even more cracking broke out, the beaver dam upriver finally giving way. “I love you too Crimson…” She whispered, pulling away from the kiss before pushing her lips back to his.

The water rose higher and higher before finally sweeping both of their legs out from under them, sending them back towards the lake, the mountainside finally crumbling away  as a massive wave of water raced towards them. The two reached out for each other only to have their paws slip just out of reach… The water pulling them both apart once more…

End Of Prologue

The gryphon was the first to wake up, coughing up water as he was draped out over a tree branch, hanging just over the lake that had nearly drowned him. “ He tried to open his eye but there was thick mud covering his head. “I-Iris?” He chirped weakly, his voice raspy from the lack of use as the sun high above rained down its light on him, covering him in its warmth. He used the last of his remaining strength to haul himself up on the drooping tree branch that he had been hanging from, taking a moment to wipe the mud from his face.

He wiped away thick globs from his eyes and opened them, taking a moment to look at all of the damage surrounding him, multiple logs and branches covering the surface of the water, floating gently and bobbing with the waves as well as some other things that looked like they could have been logs as well but, he couldn’t see as far, his eyes blurry from the other night. “W-What happened? Iris?! Crimson!?’ He called out, only to get the sound of gentle waves splashing on the shore below him. There weren’t even birds chirping… Crickets to be heard… Nothing. Nothing but water and floating logs….

It was as if the entire forest had turned into a swamp overnight and he could’ve sworn he even saw a fish swim beneath the dirty waters. The gryphon’s eyes focused on the moving creature below him when suddenly it stopped and started to grow in size. “T-That’s no fish…” Sky whispered, backing up on the branch as the ‘fish’ became three times its original size when suddenly it broke the water, its jaws wide open and snapping the end of the branch with its large jaws. “A crocodile!!!” He screamed in his mind, looking quickly to the tree that he was stranded on only to find that it was half submerged in what had to be at least sixteen feet of water, no sign of sold ‘land’ anywhere.

His frantic eyes darted from branch to branch and he started to climb as he heard another snap from directly behind him as the gator brought down the last of the branch that he had been on mere seconds ago, dragging it down and ripping it to pieces before looking up at the feathery snack as it climbed higher and higher up the tree, the ends of its mouth curling into a frown. His one chance and he blew it! Surely it would just fly away now but… Why wasn’t it flying away?

A evil grin started to spread across his muzzle and he licked his lips hungrily, watching the stranded gryphon with amusement in his eyes. He was gonna wait this one out… No matter how long it took…

Iris woke deep in the water, her eyes slowly opening as she looked around the cool waters lazily before suddenly her eyes opened wide and bubbles poured from her maw as she began to search frantically for the gryphon that had been tucked away under her wing. “No! Nonononono!!” She thought, starting to swim deeper in an attempt to find her son before suddenly feeling lightheaded, her scales turning a lighter shade of blue as she started to weaken in her search, beginning to float upwards to the light that was shining through the murky waters.

The dragoness surfaced with a sudden gasp, causing multiple birds to scatter as she gasped for breath, trying to stay above the deep waters she had found herself in. There was nothing surrounding the dragoness save for the trees in the distance and she roared loudly, she had been swept out to the middle of the lake and judging by her lack of touching the bottom, one of the deepest portions. Its depth had to be at least forty feet or more… “Crimson!!? Sky!?” She roared, thrashing in the waters as she felt a strong current beginning to suck her towards itself, the pull of the water grabbing her wings and pulling them in, causing her to go under once more.

From bystander’s point of view, they would only see a dragon head rise out of the water for a moment before disappearing once more, gone in a second as the water sucked her down again. The dirty water stung her eyes, bits of debris scratching her scales as they jetted past, one digging into her cheek, only a twig in nature but with the added force of the current it might as well have been a six foot long javelin digging into her face. She roared in pain but only managed to create a stream of bubbles that flowed around her head.

Iris’s scales were assaulted with everything ranging from stick, stones, to even other creatures bodies, all lost to the raging rapids the night before and she started to loose consciousness as the waters claimed her as their own, her pupils dilating and no longer paying attention to the attack but only to the light above the waters, watching as it slowly dimmed before becoming non existent in itself, becoming black as she closed her eyes and let out one final breath of bubbles before going limp, allowing the waters to claim her, unaware of the nearby dark figure in the water that was bobbing its way towards her, using its fins to break through the current with ease.

Crimson growled as he took his first steps onto land, his scales bloodied and his wings torn, a large gash across his face, his breathing ragged and strained as his lungs tried to take in as much air as they could. There was a faint chirping of birds and the animals around him were scattering to avoid the large predator. Of course, the dragon was in no condition to hunt. He was too injured to do anything of the sort and as he looked back to the endless waters behind him, he snarled and punched the muddy ground as hard as he could, tears welling up in his eyes, “We should have kept going! I told her!!” A single tear made its way down his cheek, quickly followed by another, then another. “I told her…” He whispered, faltering slightly as his vision blurred and he stumbled, barely managing to catch himself as he fell.

There was no way that she or the gryphon could’ve survived, he alone had barely made it out of there and as he looked out again to the waters of what was once the lake, he sniffled quietly and watched a single log float past, a few claw marks dug deeply into it. Whatever had been holding on for dear life, was gone now…

“Iris… Sky… I’m so sorry…” He whispered, turning to walk into what would hopefully be the last of the deep water, his paws squelching quietly as he stepped into the soggy grass, a small level of water submerging everything but at least it was manageable, only an inch or two deep, maybe three at most in some places.

The red dragon made his way, trying to find dry ground or at least somewhere, where he could safely clean his wounds without them getting infected due to the dirty waters, ignoring the native wildlife as some only watched the beaten predator as he walked past, deer, fox and other creatures merely watching as the dragon walked right past them. He didn’t have the stomach to fill….

The gator watched the feathery morsel above him with glee, knowing that there was no way for it to leave if it wouldn’t just fly off. “Maybe it’s wings were broken during the storm?” He thought, knowing that his tail had been struck with a falling tree branch. Sure it had hurt, but it didn’t cripple him by any means. At most it would leave a bruise that would quickly heal over the next few days.

“If his wing isn’t broken… Then what else could be wrong with him? If he had a broken wing, he certainly wasn’t showing it.. The bird above him looked different than any other creatures that he had seen before… “ He finally took a moment to ignore his angry stomach as it growled at him again and surfaced watching the bird creature curiously as it watched him right back. Both creatures locked eyes for a moment and the gryphon backed up a bit more on his branch, his hindpaw slipping as it stepped on some green moss, his entire lower half slipping off the branch and leaving him hanging by his front talons, his eyes wide as he desperately tried to regain his footing with his hind leg as the gator below swam directly under him, looking straight up at him.

“Mommy!! Iris!! Help me!!!” He screamed, flapping his wings uselessly as if to try and fly as the branch started to crack, his eyes darting to it with a scared gulp as it snapped halfway, making him slide down to the end of the branch, his tail now within biting distance of the gator below. He couldn’t gain his footing… He was gonna be gator chow, he thought, closing his eyes tightly as he heard another loud crack as the tree branch gave way, looking down one last time to see the gator’s mouth wide open directly below him, ready to accept his easy meal, his lips curled into an evil smile as he watched the gryphon above him futily struggle for life.

He was going to have quite the snack tonight and as the gryphon fell, he knew his meal was assured as he suddenly felt the bird slip into his mouth and right down to his gullet and with one wet gulp the birdy was all gone, lost to the depths of the gators ravenous gut. He gave his lips one last lick before belching softly and slipping under the waters to digest his latest snack in peace.

Iris coughed weakly and opened her eyes, the faint reflection of light through water reaching her but yet… She could breathe… Her vision was blurred but something was clearly looking over her, its nose extremely close to her own and when she groaned in pain, it suddenly yelped and backed off, a faint splash reaching her ears as the creature who had been watching over her dove right back into the waters beside her.

Her vision began to clear and could now see where she was, she was laying on a cold, soaked stone floor of sorts and all around her was a dome like stone wall, a small body of water beside her that lead to the surrounding lake.  Iris rolled over, laying on her stomach now and peering over the stone floor that held her, looking at the dark looking creature below only to find that it was staring back up at her, its eyes brimming with nervousness and curiousity with what it had just saved. It was an odd creature, with flippers and a large reptilian head, a thicker, chubbier body than most creatures she had seen… Except she had seen once before… She had no idea what it’s real name was, but she had heard a legend about something called a.. Loch ness monster? Yeah… That was the name of it…

Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed its mouth open up ever so slightly and she could hear a soft cry come from the water. She gradually dipped her head down and suddenly it swam deeper still, a look of worry on its face as it looked back at her. Then, she heard it yet again, the water actually making the cry louder and easier to understand, “Hello?”

The gator lazily floated on the river, enjoying listening to his belly digest with a smirk on his face as it bubbled gently, the gryphon had stopped moving a few minutes ago and he let out a feathery belch before sighing happily, watching as feather lazily floated downwards and into the water before floating away from him. He snickered and lazily pushed on his gut, watching as the thick layer of pudge gave way for a couple of inches before stopping as it touched the gryphon’s form.

He smiled and looked over at the swampy land that was beside him, lazily rolling over onto his belly and crawling on land, letting his gut spill below him as he belched out the gryphon’s skull, completely clean from anything whatsoever. He looked at it with a frown, an intense feeling of satisfaction and guilt rising within him as his belly let off another happy gurgle, claiming the rest of the gryphon within.

He sighed softly and closed his eyes just as the skull started to glow softly, the light beginning to spread all over and forming a neck, then a body, then finally wings before the light flashed brightly and dissipated, revealing a saliva covered, but living Sky, who was out like a light, as if he had been in a deep sleep.

The gator growled softly as the light leaked past his eyelids and he opened one eye, then the other as he gasped, the gryphon was alive! “But… But how?” He thought, quickly getting up, blushing softly as his gut sloshed noisily with white gryphon goop, no real form in it with the same consistency as salt water taffy. The gryphon was fully intact, sleeping peacefully as if nothing had ever happened. He smiled a little bit and now that his hunger was gone, he didn’t feel the need to eat the odd bird creature again and actually used his thick tail to move him closer to his large gut with a smile on his face, letting him rest as the sun bathed them both in warmth.

On both sides of him were rivers, newly formed by the recent floods and already they were beginning to bustle with life, fish could be seen every so often as Crimson would stop to look, each one wriggling through the murky brown water and he sighed as a family of fish swam past, quickly dissipating when they saw him looking down at them from above.

He sighed and brought his head up, growling quietly before suddenly punching the water with a snarl. “We should have kept going!!” He roared before letting his head droop once more, “We should have kept going….” He said, much quieter than before as he started walking upriver once more, climbing over broken logs and branches until he saw a large lump of scales just out of water.

He gasped and ran to it before seeing what it truly was. Yes it was a scaly creature but unfortunately not the one that he had been searching for and he growled, “Stupid gator…” He growled, using his tail to shove it back into the water without a second thought, making it open its eyes and snap at him, missing him by inches and revealing a flash of white as it toppled into the water. “Wait a second…. “ Crimson muttered, gently picking up the pure white creature in his claws, using his tail to slap the gator’s cheek as he tried to get back on land, sending him whimpering into the water again, merely looking at the two from below the surface. The gator had gotten rather attached to that gryphon… He didn’t want to loose him to another predator…

Crimson gasped at what he had found and hugged the fluffy white creature close, making it’s eyes open quickly followed by a series of chirps, “No mister gator! I don’t wanna be digested!! I don’t wanna die!!” Sky cried, fighting back against the wall of scales holding him until he started to tire out, giving one last flap of his wings as he panted heavily, slowly looking from the scaly chest upwards until he saw the smiling face of Crimson. “Hello little gryphon…” He whispered, gently licking Sky’s cheek and making him gasp before hugging Crimson’s snout, “Crimson!! I thought I was a goner!!” He squealed, clinging onto the dragon’s snout even as he pulled away.

“Don’t worry Sky… That alligator won’t hurt you…” He took a moment to look into the water before snarling angrily, “Get out of here!!” Grinning toothily as the little dark blob quickly swam off as fast as it could.

Iris’s eyes widened and she quickly pulled her head back out of the water, her nostrils steaming as she quickly looked around before dipping her entire head in once more, trying to say hello back but only creating a stream of bubbles from her maw. “What’s the matter?” It asked, starting to come closer to her although still being hesitant.

Iris nodded in response and quickly pulled her head back up, gasping for air as she heard another soft cry from beneath the water, the water dino’s voice muffled outside of the water and the dragoness sighed, finally catching her breath before calmly saying, “Please come up here…” Of course, to the monster’s ears, all she heard were muffled words, each one separated from the others world. Finally, her head broke the water’s surface and Iris could finally get a good look at it, the creature was obviously something that wasn’t very common, odder still the fact that when she spoke again, all of her words were muffled.

“Hold on…” the dragoness whispered, pushing her head under the water, gently pushing the monster’s head down as well, “Can you understand me now?” Iris asked, yelling as loud as she could as bubbles streamed from her mouth once more, grinning happily as the monster nodded and smiled, “And you can understand me? “ She asked back, her eyes lighting up with excitement as all she could talk to were the fish that she ate, but none of them ever responded back to her.

Iris nodded, her face starting to loose some of its color the longer that she was under the water and she pulled her head back up, getting a breath of fresh air before submerging her head once more only to meet the monster’s sad eyes, “You’re an air –breather aren’t you?” She said sadly before looking down, “You can breath both…” She said quieter still as Iris merely nodded in agreement.

“What is your name?” Iris tried to say, not wanting to ask why she was brought her when the creature was in such a delicate state. The water creature looked up at her and smiled softly, her eyes loosing a bit of the sadness that had filled them moments ago. “My name is Nessie, what’s yours miss dragon?” She asked back, curiosity now filling her voice and face. Iris took another breath of fresh air before continuing, “My name is Iris, it’s good to meet you Nessie.” She said back, giving Nessie a calm, reassuring smile as she swam a bit closer to the surface. “Would you mind taking me back to land Nessie?” She asked calmly, getting a small frown and a nod from the water creature below her as she gave a small nod and swam up to the surface.

“Don’t worry Nessie… I won’t leave you alone…” Iris whispered, noticing her sad demeanor as she surfaced, her head drooping slightly. Nessie’s eyes started to sparkle slightly and she perked up a bit, “You’d… You’d wanna come see me again?” She asked excitedly, a smile forming on her face as Iris nodded in agreement before the two finally surfaced.

“Now… How does this work?” Iris asked,  raising an eyebrow, wondering how she had gotten here in the first place as Nessie blushed and pointed downwards with a flipper, both of them submerging to speak once more, “I gotta eat you…” She said weakly, a broken smile appearing on her face as Iris suddenly backed out of the water, “You… You have to what?” She asked, sounding nervous as she spoke, making Nessie’s eyes go wide as she quickly motioned for Iris to come below once more, “I swear I won’t hurt you! I gotta take you to shore without you dying…” She said weakly, desperately hoping that she wouldn’t loose the one friend that she had gained.

“I… If it’s the only way…” She whispered, not looking at Nessie as the little thing sighed sadly and floated downwards a bit, “I’m so sorry…” She said softly before suddenly jetting upwards with her mouth open, taking in the dragon’s head with terrifying ease, quickly gulping, each wet gulp bringing the dragoness down further and further until she let out a soft, bubble filled belch as the dragoness entered her stomach and forced some special liquids into her belly, trying to knock out the dragoness so she wouldn’t have to be awake for the trip.

Iris meanwhile looked around the stomach quickly, instantly trying to clamber back out as she felt more than just saliva enter the stomach with her. “Wait!! Wait Nessie! I’ll stay with you!!” She cried out, her voice getting weaker and weaker as her eyelids started to droop, Nessie’s eyes leaking bits of black tears as she quickly swam off, not hearing the dragon’s pleas as she swam out into the open lake.

Iris woke with a sputtering cough and familiar voices calling out to her, she opened her eyes, seeing nothing but light for a moment before everything cleared up, revealing Sky’s and Crimson’s face looking down at her in worry, desperately trying to wake her, “Mommy? Mommy!!” Sky cried out, hugging her snout tightly as she came to, only to get pulled away by Crimson’s tail, “Calm down kiddo… Mommy needs to breathe…” He whispered, holding him back before looking back at his mate, “A-Are you okay my love?” He whispered, holding her head up as she fully came to.

In front of her was the lake, sparkling and shining brightly without anything breaking its natural beauty. “Y-Yes Crimson…” She whispered, looking back up at him with a soft smile. “I’m fine…”

She looked back out on the lake with a small frown, hoping that she didn’t hurt Nessie’s feelings as the creature watched them all from below the waters, a weak smile on her face. Hopefully… Iris was a dragon of her word… With that, Nessie turned and swam downwards, disappearing into the darkness of the lake.
